I’m glad to hear that you are interested in dressing more preppy. Whenever someone asks a question about changing their style, I always direct them to the Polyvore links on my page. Polyvore is a great place to find new outfits and styles, and it always provides you with a store so you can buy them! The profiles on my page are especially preppy (and especially fashionable!) so if you’re looking for advice on what to wear I’d suggest checking them out.

Also, there is a link on my page called “The Prep Essentials”. It’s something I wrote that contains links to articles that advertise the ’staple’ prep items for your wardrobe. I’d suggest starting there.

As for not knowing one prep, I’d say ‘who cares?’. As Ralph Lauren once said

The excitement for me of being in this business is not following, it’s leading and having an inspiration. I’ve given all my feelings out in terms of my clothes. I feel like I write through my clothes

So, I’d advice you to lead. You’ve obviously got the inspiration! Try starting the new fashion trend: prep.
